Best view in town – Cathay Room Brunch

Cathay is an anglicism of the old word for China, Qidan. Cathay Room is the name of one of Shanghais best brunch places. Located on the 9th floor of the Fairmont Peace Hotel, the Cathay Room overlooks the Lujiazui Skyline. This morning, we are almost by ourselves; at the best table in the house.

The interior of the Cathay Room is stunning. From our table, we overlook the Bund and Lujiazui. The view is even more spectacular from the terrace. With some fog, Lujiazui looks like an island floating in space. The buffet includes seafood (oysters, king crabs, clams, sashimi, etc.), cold cuts, salads and an amazing desert selection. Besides the buffet, we can select two a la cart dishes from the menue. We pick the 65C poached egg and the Wagyu Beef. Mouth watering. We enjoy the Laurent Perrier Champagne. At the end of the day, the elevator takes us back down to the “normal” world on street level. What a pity. But paradise is only paradise if its finite.
